Animal Boy

Eraser

I'm looking at a drawing that is yellow and black. And it appears to be some type of primate. Care to elaborate?

Well, it is not a primate ... I don't think. I think its a type of monkey family. A lion monkey.

A lion monkey. Is that an actual species?

I don't know. I think so.

What was the inspiration for this drawing?

Well, this book. It was, it had a bunch of cheetahs sitting on a tree ... and a lot of grass around it. It was in Africa, like an African tree spread out.

How do you know it was in Africa? Because of the tree?

Yeah. And because I don't think cheetahs live in any other place.

Mmm. So we've established that the cover of this book had cheetahs on it and this is a lion monkey. What did you use to draw this picture?

Umm .. I used charcoal.

Where did you get the charcoal from?

My grandparents.

What was the experience like drawing with charcoal? Because I know this is the first drawing that I have seen you do that uses that media. Is it easier to draw with charcoal than it is with pencil?

Oh, it's harder drawing with charcoal because you have to be really careful. It could get all over the place.

What do you mean "get all over the place"?

Like if you touch it, like if you break it a little bit, and then if you try to rub it off the picture, you can see it.

So, it crumbs and then it smudges. Is that what you are saying?

Well, I have this thing that I can put on it. I think it's this thing that kind of looks like Playdoh. Looks like clay. It's brown. Well .... like that.

Something you wrap around the tip of the charcoal pencil?

No. If it gets in the way of the picture you just rub it against it and it comes off.

Oh, so it's a charcoal eraser.

Yes.

When you were making this drawing did you find that you had to do a lot of erasing? Or was it very easy for you to draw it without any planning? Just to immediately start to draw it?

Well, it was really easy. This one it was really easy to immediately start it. But the first one that I drew was a velociraptor picture (that's another one) and this ... well ... what was I talking about again?
