Tiny Molecules

Baltimore - Wednesday, January 12, 2005

This turtle looks like it's trying to swim to the bottom of the sea. Is that what turtles like this do?

Well, sea turtles do not like to go to the bottom of the sea. They kind of do, but they mostly go on the surface and cool down in the sun and they also go down for coral and stuff. That's one of the only reasons that they do it.

They eat coral?

Yes. I think so. Actually, no. They eat weeds.

They eat seaweed?

They eat seaweed and that's mostly what they eat.

Do they have teeth?

No. They do what birds do.

Do they have a special place where they go to relieve themselves?

Umm. What's relieve mean again?

It means go to the bathroom.

(Laughing) No, no, no, no. They don't have a special place to do that. They just go ... they don't go anywhere. They just do it where they want to do it.

So they might be swimming and they decide they have to go to the bathroom and they just let it go.

Yea.

How do the fish feel about that?

They don't real care. I mean like little tiny things eat it.

Little tiny things? Plankton?

Yea, plankton and sea shrimp.

Sea shrimp eat turtle feces?

Yea.

Do they drink the urine?

No.

What happens to the urine?

It goes like, I mean, I guess tiny molecules eat it.

Tiny molecules? What eats the molecules?

I can't get this far into the story! Sorry!

Was this drawing based on a photograph or did it come from your imagination?

It was a photograph, remember when you were teaching that school you had that animal book? That's where the picture came from.

And you also used this in a Christmas gift didn't you?

Yes.

A limited edition printing. It's a very nice picture. Do you have anything else you would like to say about this one?

It's just made out of pencil and that's about it.

One last question. Do turtles dream?

Well, I don't think so. And I don't even know if they go to sleep or not. But they do rest. Yes, they go to sleep, usually when they are bathing in the sun. Above the surface.

If you had the chance, would you like to spend the night with a turtle in your bed?

No.

Why not?

Because they're not really good pets.

What are they good for?

They are good for just being out in the wild.
